Can I Draw Both Railroad Retirement From My Ex-Spouse And Social Security?

i will be 68 this month. I started drawing RRR from my ex spouse when i was 64. I am still working full-time. Is it possible to draw RRR from my ex spouse and also draw SS from my own earnings? Or can I only receive the one or the other?

Hi,

It's possible to receive both, but not both benefits in full. If you file for Social Security (SS) benefits, the Railroad Board will reduce your Tier 1 Railroad Retirement (RR) benefit rate dollar for dollar by the amount of your SS rate. You would, however, continue to receive any Tier 2 RR benefits to which you are entitled in full. Therefore, it would likely only be advantageous for you to file for Social Security if your benefit rate would be higher than your Tier 1 RR rate. And, if it is higher it would likely be best for you to wait until age 70 to file for your SS since you could continue earning delayed retirement credits on your SS until then (https://www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/delayret.html).

Best, Jerry
