Can I Collect Spousal Benefits At Age 65?

My wife is 70 and collecting Social Security. I will turn 65 on April 10 2018. Can I collect spousal benefit then?

Hi,

You couldn't file just for spousal benefits any time before your full retirement age (FRA) of 66 without also being deemed to file for your own retirement benefits. In that case you would only receive essentially the higher of the two rates and your benefit rate would be reduced for age.

However, assuming that you haven't already filed for your own benefits you could file just for spousal benefits only at age 66 and allow your own benefit rate to grow until age 70. You may want to use our maximization software in order to determine if this would be the best strategy in your case.

Best, Jerry
