My spouse retired at 66 (FRA) and does not want to go back to work. I will be 66 this year but want to wait until 70 to retire.
Can I collect half of my spouses social security with the new laws?
Do I need to file with social security at 66 so they know I'm waiting until 70 to retire?
Is there anything else I need to be aware of? I'm currently 1/4 of the way through your revised book. There is so much to learn but I'm currently only interested in what pertains to me.
I will be moving to Arkansas when I turn 70. Is there anything I need to know regarding the move that pertains to social security?
Hi,
Yes, since you were born prior to January 1 1954, you can still file a restricted application for spousal benefits only at age 66 and let your own benefits grow until age 70.
When you file your application for spousal benefits, be sure that it includes a remark such as: 'I wish to restrict the scope of this application to spousal benefits only.', or 'I wish to restrict retirement benefits on my own record from the scope of this application.'
Then, when you reach age 70 you will need to file a separate application to receive retirement benefits on your own record. However, if your own benefit amount at age 70 would not be higher than your spousal benefit, there's no need to make the switch.
If you move after you begin receiving benefits, you should file a change of address with Social Security either online, in person or by phone.
Best, Jerry
