Can I Collect 6 Months Of Retroactive Spousal Benefits?

My wife is 67 and just filed for her social security in June 2018. Can I file for spousal benefits and go back to December 2017 to collect an extra 6 months or am i limited to file in June also.

Hi,

You can't draw spousal benefits for any months prior to your wife's first month of entitlement to benefits, so if she chose to start her benefits effective with June 2018 you couldn't qualify for spousal benefits any earlier than that.

You and your wife should strongly consider using our maximization software to make sure that you're choosing the best possible filing strategy.

Best, Jerry
