Can I Claim Spousal Benefits When My Husband Retires?

I medical retired 6 yrs ago at the age of 59 and I have SS. My husband will retired at 62 in 4 yrs. His retirement check from SS will be around 1,000 more than what I recieved. Can I claim Spousal benefits when he retired? How much it will be? My SS is 1,248 just now.

Hi,

I assume you mean that you're drawing Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits. You can apply for spousal benefits when your husband files for his benefits, but you'll only qualify for additional benefits if 50% of your husband's primary insurance amount (PIA) is higher than your own PIA. A person's PIA is equal to their Social Security retirement benefit rate if they start drawing their benefits at full retirement age (FRA), or their full SSDI rate.

I have no way of knowing how much your spouse's PIA will be, so I can't tell you whether or not you'll be able to get spousal benefits. You and your husband may want to consider using our software (https://maximizemysocialsecurity.com/purchase) to do your Social Security planning.

Best, Jerry
