Can I Claim Social Security On My Ex-Spouse?

Hi Larry,
I have heard and read that I can collect on my ex spouse social security if I did not remarry. I had been married to my ex for 12 years and divorced for 14 years. I did remarry an immigrant that has been deported. I still live in the United States. Can I claim social security on my ex spouse?

Hi,

Assuming that you've divorced your most recent husband, then the answer is maybe. Here's a list of the requirements for divorced spousal benefit eligibility: https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.03/handbook-0311.html.
