Can I Change My Month To Start Benefits?

I filed for medicare and have appt. to file for s.s. when agent asked when I wanted benefits to start I said may 2018 . if this means I won't get 65 yr. Benefit can I fix that?

Hi,

Yes, and you may also want to use our maximization software to determine your best strategy for claiming benefits before you decide on which month and year to choose.

If your claim hasn't yet been processed you can probably simply re-contact the person who took your claim and ask them to amend your application, but if your claim has been processed then you would likely need to submit a written request for a different month of entitlement using a form SSA-795 (https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ssa-795.pdf). Or, if you want to delay your month of entitlement to benefits for more than 4 months you would likely need to withdraw your application (https://www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/withdrawal.html) and re-file later.

Best, Jerry
