Can I Buy A Car For My Relative Who Is On SSI?

Can I purchase a used car for a relative on Ssi and give it to them. Or does it have to be gifted.

Hi.. I don't believe that giving a car to a person receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) would have any adverse effect on their benefits, assuming that the person doesn't already own a car. SSI excludes a home and one automobile from counting as assets for purposes of SSI eligibility. However, my expertise on the SSI program is limited, so you should check with an SSI expert at the Social Security Administration before following through with your plan.
