Are Social Security Offices Open To The Public?

Have Social Security offices re-opened now?

Hi. My understanding is that Social Security offices have now re-opened to the public, but they are only providing a limited range of in-office services. Pandemic related rules, such as mask wearing, may vary depending on local regulations.

Most services that can be handled at the front desk are available, such as applying for a new or replacement Social Security card, and changes of address or direct deposit information. However, filing online is still the preferred method of applying for Social Security benefits when possible. Applications for benefit types that can't currently be claimed online (e.g. survivor benefits) can be done by phone, or in some cases in person at a Social Security office. You can make an appointment to apply for benefits by phone or in person by calling Social Security at 800-772-1213.

Best, Jerry
