Am I Entitled To Both Social Security And VA Benefits?

My husband worked for the Veterans administration am I entitled to receive both social security and V A benefit? My husband died in 2009.
Thank You
Mary

Hi Mary,

I'm sorry for your loss.

I can't really answer your question without more information. If your husband was insured for Social Security benefits you may be eligible for widow's benefits, but you would have to be at least age 60 or 50 and disabled to qualify.

If your husband was a civil servant for the VA, you may also qualify for a civil service survivor pension. And, if he was a military veteran you may qualify for VA benefits as his survivor. I'm not an expert on the rules for either civil service nor VA benefit eligibility, though, so you'll need to check with those agencies regarding your possible entitlement. I can tell you that if you are eligible for VA and/or civil service benefits on your husband's record, it would not affect your Social Security retirement or widow's benefits.

Best, Jerry
