Am I Entitled To Anything From My Deceased Ex-Spouse's Account?

My ex-husband died in September of last year. We were divorced in June 2015 after being separated for over 20 years. I haven't remarried. Am I entitled to anything from his social security account?

Hi. That depends on your age, among other factors. You must be at least age 60, or at least age 50 and disabled, in order to potentially qualify for surviving divorced spousal benefits (https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.04/handbook-0403.html). Also, if you're not yet full retirement age (FRA), there would be a limit on how much you could earn and still be able to collect benefits. And, if you're already collecting your own benefits then you could only qualify for additional survivor benefits if your survivor rate is higher than your own benefit rate.

Best, Jerry
