Can Anyone Tell Me For Sure When They Recalculate Delayed Retirement Credits?

Can anyone tell me for sure when they definately recalculate delayed retirement benefits? Is it each January or every other year in January? Why isn't there a form letter sent to the people that will be getting delayed retirement credits explaining exactly when they are recalculated and when the people will be receiving the adjusted benefit? Thank you

Hi,

No, not exactly. Recomputations to include partial year delayed retirement credits (DRC) are effective with payments due for the following January, but the actual process for performing the recomputations is done automatically and the schedule is not announced. Even the employees at Social Security offices are not notified of the dates that the recomputations will be done. My understanding is that the automated DRC recomputations are done every other year, so if you are due an increase effective with January of 2018 for example, you may not actually see the increase until the latter part of 2019. The increases are retroactive to the applicable January payment, though, so you would get any back pay due.

Best, Jerry
