I am divorced, working full time and collecting my SS. I am 73. I would like to remarry. My prospective husband is almost 67, working full time and collecting SS. If we marry, do our SS payments remain the same? We sti9ll plan to work full time for a few years. Thanks, Sharon
Hi Sharon,
As long as both you and your prospective husband are receiving benefits only on your own records, getting married wouldn't adversely affect your benefits. However, if either of you are receiving divorced spousal benefits, those benefits would terminate if you remarry.
Depending on your relative benefit rates, it's possible that either you or your new husband could qualify for additional benefits as a spouse if you marry. In order for that to happen, though, one of you would need to have a full retirement age rate (PIA) that's more than twice as much as the other's PIA.
Best, Jerry
