Can My Wife Start Drawing At Age 62 And Continue Working?

My wife will be 62 in January of 2018, can she begin to draw her SS and also continue to work?

Hi,

That depends on how much she earns. There is an earnings test that can result in partial or full withholding of a person's benefits until they reach full retirement age (https://www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/whileworking2.html). In 2017, the exempt amount of earnings is $16,920, but the exempt amount for 2018 won't be announced until later this year. If your wife files for benefits at age 62 and earns more than the exempt amount, Social Security will withhold $1 of her benefits for each $2 that she earns in excess of the exempt amount.

Best, Jerry
