Did My Husband Forfeit Benefits By Not Filing Sooner?

My husband is age 74 still working and has not filed for social security benefits. He plans to file next month (May 2017). Will Social Security pay him back for the benefits since age 70 to May 2017? Did my husband forfeited his benefits from age 70 until April 2017 (the period he did not file for the benefits?
Thank you.

Hi,

Unfortunately, it sounds like your husband did forfeit benefits by not filing sooner. Social Security will pay benefits retroactively for no more than 6 months prior to the month in which your husband finally does file his application. He has nothing to gain by not filing as soon as possible, since his current monthly rate would be no higher than if he had started drawing at age 70.

Best, Jerry
