Does My Recent Marriage Affect My Benefits?

Hello Larry, I'm 67 years old from Florida and retired to the Philippines in 2012. I have been collecting $450 monthly ss since I was 62. I recently married my 27 year old Filipina girlfriend after living together here in the Philippines for 5 years. She has no income. Will my marriage affect my ss benefits in any way? Thanx, Richard

Hi Richard,

I don't know of any reason why it would, at least assuming that you are receiving Social Security benefits based on your own work record. Social Security retirement benefits are based on a person's work history, and are not affected by the worker's marital status.

Best, Jerry
