Can You Help Me?

Hi,

If you believe that you have sufficient work credits to qualify for Social Security benefits and Social Security is telling you that you don't, you can still insist on filing a claim for benefits. Then, if your claim is disallowed you would have appeal rights (https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10041.pdf).

I have no way of knowing whether or not you have enough credits, but assuming that you're at least age 62 you'd need at least 40 quarters (i.e. 10 years) of Social Security coverage in order to qualify for Social Security retirement benefits (https://www.ssa.gov/oact/cola/QC.html). If you think you have that many quarters and Social Security says that you don't, you may want to ask them for a printout of your earnings history to make sure that you've received proper credit for you earnings.

Best, Jerry
