Am I Able To Work Full-Time And Still Receive Full Social Security Benefits?

Dear Larry,
I will reach FRA on Nov. 6, 2018, and my wife will reach FRA on Oct. 10, 2018. I have more than needed SS credits to receive benefits while my wife is eligible for health benefits but does not have enough credits for other benefits.

I would like file and receive benefits beginning 01/02/2019 but would like to continue working at least part-time. When should I file the requisite paperwork with Social Security Admin to receive my first check in Jan or Feb 2019? Am I able to work full-time if I decide to do so and still receive full SS benefits?

Do I Have To Be Deceased In Order For My Wife To Qualify For Child-In-Care Spousal Benefits?

I am currently 61 years old with a 30 year old disabled from birth son and wife who turns 62 in Jan 2019. I will retire this June 2018. I turn 62 in August 2019 when I file for SS benefits starting Sept 1 2019 will my wife be able to file for child in care benefits ? I was told that that only applies when the husband is deceased. With a full retirement of $2796 and a family max of $4892 the SS office told me I would receive $2038 at age 62. My son would receive 50 % of my Full Retirement amount $1398 and my wife would receive 37.5% or $1048. I think that she should be able to . . . Read More

What Effect Will WEP Have On My Ex-Wife's Divorced Spousal Benefit?

My ex-wife and I are almost exactly the same age, turning 65 in about 6 months. At 65, I will claim and receive a pension based on non-covered employment. My ex will file for spousal benefits when we turn FRA at 66. What effect will WEP have on her divorced spousal benefits on my record? Also, if I file for divorced spousal benefits on her record will WEP be a factor? Stumped in SinCity ;-)

Hi,

It sounds like WEP will be an indirect factor in what your ex-wife receives from your record, since her divorced spousal rate would be calculated based on 50% . . . Read More

Is A Disabled Person Who Is Forced To Take Early Retirement Automatically Eligible For Medicare?

When a disabled person on SSI & Medicaid is forced into early retirement (age 62) is that person automatically eligible for Medicare or does the person have to wait until age 65? If eligible, does that person need to apply themselves or once receiving Social Security does Medicare automatically begin since Medicaid was terminated? Does the person need to reapply for Medicaid? Can the person possibly receive both as primary & secondary coverage?

Am I Missing Something?

Sorry that this is going to be complicated! :) My husband was a fairly new immigrant when he had a devastating accident (hit by another driver, with not enough insurance or wherewithal to help my husband) with major life-changing injuries (lost a leg to the hip, shattered his pelvis, his foot, an arm, his coccyx, his sternum, internal bleeding, etc. although luckily no brain injury or paralysis). He was a green card holder but had only 13 credits at the time and so could not get SSDI. Since then, he has been running his own company but not making enough to really pay himself or . . . Does It Make Any Difference That My Friend's Deceased Husband Was 4 Years Younger Than Her?

Hi. My friend Donna's husband died in 2011 at age 53. Someone at the local Social security office told her that she could not claim a deceased spousal benefit and
suspend her own benefit to age 70. I do not think that is true.

Donna DOB 11-20-53 Age 64 PIA $2452.

Nick DOB 9-12-1957
DOD 8-15-2011 Age 53 PIA $2303.

Does the fact that Nick was 4 years younger than Donna have any effect on her eligibility? She has scheduled an appointment at Social Security for February 24. She would like to begin collecting on his record and delay collecting . . . Read More

If My Husband Files For His Benefits At Age 62 And I Die, What Would He Receive?

Hello! I am 61, presently collecting Social Security Disability for cancer diagnosis with 3-5 years anticipated lifespan. My husband is considering collecting SS on his record beginning at age 62. Our earnings records are comparable with his projected full retirement benefit about $100 more/month than mine. If he collects on his own record at 62, how would his benefit change when I die since I'm receiving SSD payment equal to my full retirement amount? Thanks for the help!

Hi,

I'm sorry to hear of your diagnosis. Hopefully, you'll prove your doctors . . . Read More

When Should We Notify Social Security That My Husband's Earnings Will Exceed The $17,040 Limit?

We signed my husband up for ss and he is 64 will be 65 in September due to the fact the company he worked for was closing. He has made $5000 so far this year and now has taken a job with another company. Do I need to contact ss after he has reached the $17040 limit or just wait until the end of the year and let them hold his next year ss checks until he has paid back the money he owes?

Hi,

You are supposed to notify Social Security as soon as you realize that your earnings will be over the exempt amount for the year. Also, it's almost always better . . . Read More

Would I Be Entitled To Any Veteran's Or Social Security Benefits From My Husband's Record?

I currently receive Social Security Disability, since 2012. I was married to a disabled VET who passed away in 1986 I have never remarried. Would I be entitled to any of his vet benefits or Social Security benefits? I had never included his information when I applied for SSDI, it never occurred to me that I could or should.

Hi,

My only area of expertise is Social Security, so I can't tell you whether or not you would qualify for veteran's benefits. You'll probably need to check with the Veteran's Administration.

It sounds like you may qualify . . . Read More
