Is It Correct That I Don't Need To Return My Mother's Final Benefit Payment?

Hello Sir.
My mother passed away on the 17th of last month. Her SS payment was a direct deposit to her checking account on the 3rd of every month. I have been her care giver the last 12 years and am a co-owner on her checking account.
My brother-in-law, who lost his mother (approx. 10-15 yrs. ago) said that when she died SS took back the month that she died (she died on the 27th). Then after they had closed her accounts, after everything they showed had cleared then a few month's later they received a letter from her bank saying that the SSA had forced them to re- . . . Can I Filie For Spousal Benefits Now Or At FRA And Still Get My Full Social Security At Age 70?

Dear Larry,

Loved your revised edition of Get What's Yours.

i will be marrying a 68 year old widow who has $2,600 in PIA based on her late husband's work record. I am 62 and not working. I understand from your book that our marriage after our ages 60 will not forfeit her PIA based on her late husband. If I file for spousal benefits, will it be based on her $2600 or on the $1300 of her own work record? Do I understand your book correctly that I can file for spousal benefits now or at FRA and still get my full social security at age 70? How do I do that? Thanks, . . . Read More

Can Both My Wife And I File Restricted Applications, Or Only One Of Us?

I will turn 66 in MARCH 2019 and my wife will turn 66 in August 2019. I have heard that at FRA we can file a restricted application only and collect spousal benefits until age 70 while our regular benefit continues to grow until age 70. Can both of us file a restricted application and if so when, or can only one spouse do this. We were both born in 1953. What would give us the most extra spousal benefit since we are still eligible for doing this. Your calculator keeps recomending us both delay filing until age 70 which may not be feasible. We are both still working and plan to . . . Read More

Can You Show Me How To Calculate How Much I Would Get At Age 62?

Hi !
I am divorced . Married more than 10 yrs . I am 60 yrs now . Ex-husband 62 .He social security higher than me . AT this time my SS early 62 at
$ 660 . My ex husband at 62 yrs at $2200 , when he 66 at $2500 . Can you show me how to calculate how much i will get at age 62 yrs.

Thank you so much

Hi,

Your figures can't be entirely accurate, because if your ex-husband's benefit rate at age 66 was $2500 his age 62 rate would only be around $1833.

In any case, assuming that your own retirement rate at age 62 would be $660, that . . . Read More

Is This The Best Scenario In Our Case?

My wife turns 62 in Sep 18. I turn 66 in Feb 19. I'm planning to start collecting SSN when I turn 66 (my FRA). My SSN will be approx $30K/yr, my wife's will be approx $8.4K/year (at 62). We were thinking of having her file for her benefits when she turns 62 in Sep 18, then I start my FRA benefits in Feb 19. Then in Jan 2023 (her FRA), have her file for my benefits. Is that the best scenario in our case? Thanks for any advice!

Hi,

No, because the strategy you propose isn't possible. If your wife files for her own retirement benefits at age 62 she'll . . . Read More

Is Our Financial Planner Correct?

Hi--I purchased MaxMySS and ran a What If scenario with my husband filing at 68 and my filing at 70. We have a disabled adult child. I was born in 10/1958 and my husband in 7/1953. The results show my filing for child-in-care spouse's benefits in Jul 2021, the year I turn 63, and my husband turns 68. This looks good to us. However, a financial planner we've consulted says if I file for CIC spousal benefits in 2021, I will be "filing early and will receive whichever reduced benefit (spousal or yours) is higher. You won't be able to restrict the application to one benefit." Is . . . Read More

Will My Benefits Increase Under SSDI?

I receive 997.00 a mo ssi job injury 6 years ago, I turn 62 this month. when I applied for benefits I learned my retirement was 1,600.00 a mo I was ruled permanently disabled. will my benefits increase under ssdi

Hi,

I'm sorry, but I can't answer that question without more information. First of all, I'm not clear on what kind of benefit you're currently receiving. If it's Supplemental Security Income (SSI), then that benefit would stop if you become eligible for a Social Security benefit that's higher than your SSI benefit. However, if what you're . . . Can You Supply The SSA Link Regarding Child In Care Rules?

I purchased Maximize My SS and have tried various What If scenarios because we have a disabled adult child. The software shows that I (spouse) get a child-in-care spousal benefit. I'm confused about how that works. The SSA says this benefit stops unless I am old enough to receive benefits based on age. Page 62 of your book (Get What's Yours) says I can receive this benefit at any age. What is the rule? And could you supply the SSA link? Thanks.

Hi,

I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for, but there is no age requirement or limit to qualify for . . . Read More

If I File For Survivor Benefits At Age 66 Would I Receive The Amount That My Ex-Husband Was Receiving When He Died?

My ex-husband, whom I understand I am eligible to collect off him due to being married for 25yrs. and I never re-married, was on social security disability for 2 yrs. and then passed away at age 58. My question is would I receive the same amount he was collecting when he passed, if I wait till age 66? He had more paid into social security than I do. We never knew where he was but I did receive his social security statement and it said if you were to die today your spouse would receive 1700.00. Would that be an accurate gage? He collected social security disability and than . . . Read More

Do I Have To Wait Until My Ex-Husband Is 62 To File For Benefits On His Record?

Ex husband will be 59 in Nov. I will be 65 in October of this year. We were divorced in 2007. I know I am entitles to his soc. sec. Do I have to wait until he is 62 or can I draw his when I take full retirement at 66 next year. If I take early retirement at 65 can I draw his also.

Hi,

Your ex would have to be at least age 62 or drawing Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits in order for you to potentially qualify for divorced spousal benefits on his record.

You could file for your own retirement benefits now or when you reach full . . . Read More
