Would I Meet The Requirements For Benefits On My Ex-Spouse's Account?
Good evening. I am wondering if I will qualify for expel Social Security benefits when I'm eligible. I was married September 20, 1980 and divorced January 17, 1990. Would this qualify the 10 year mark? Thank you for your time Michelle
Hi Michelle. I assume you're asking about divorced spousal or survivor benefits. If the dates of your marriage and final divorce are accurate, then the answer is no. You must have been married for at least a full 10 consecutive years in order to be able to qualify for divorced spousal or survivor benefits on the record of an ex-spouse (https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0300202005#a).
