Why Is My Payment Date Changing?

Hi Larry. I usually get my check on r the 2nd Wednesday of the month. Just saw a bulletin that says it will not becoming till 4th week of the month. Why is this changing.

Hi. I don't know what type of bulletin you're referring to, but if it wasn't directed to you from Social Security then I wouldn't rely on it. The rules regarding benefit payment dates haven't changed since 1997, so the only thing that could possibly cause your payment date to move from the 2nd Wednesday to the 4th Wednesday is if you're going to be collecting benefits on a different person's account.

Which Wednesday of a month that a person is paid their benefits depends on the birthday of the worker on whose account the benefits are paid. So, if you are collecting benefits based on your own work record then your payment date would be determined based on your birthday. But, if you're not collecting your own benefits but instead are collecting auxiliary (e.g. spousal, child) or survivor benefits, then your payment date would be based on the birthday of the worker on whose record your benefits are paid.

If the worker on whose account the benefits are paid was born in the first 10 days of a month, then any benefits paid on that worker's account are paid on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. If the worker was born between the 11th and 20th of a month, then any benefits paid on that worker's account are paid on the 3rd Wednesday of the month. And, if the worker was born after the 20th day of a month, then any benefits payable on that worker's account would be paid on the 4th Wednesday of the month.

There are exceptions to the above rule that allow some people to be paid their benefits on the 3rd day of the month, but that apparently isn't involved in your case. If you have questions about your payment date, you should call Social Security so they can look up your records.

Best, Jerry
