Who Do I Contact About Getting A Refund Of The Medicare Premiums I Overpaid?

In October 2021, I paid my Medicare premium 3 months in advance for November 2021, December 2021 and January 2022. I signed up for Social Security in November 2021 so I could start receiving benefits in January 2022. I received my first Social Security check in February and they deducted my Medicare premium from the check. I already sent a letter to: Medicare Contact Center Operations at PO Box 1270, Lawrence, KS 66044 on April 18, 2022 and haven’t received a response or a refund. Who do I contact about getting a refund for the Medicare premiums that I paid in advance for January 2022 since Social Security took it out of check?

Hi. If Social Security withheld Medicare premiums for months that you already paid out of pocket, then they should automatically refund the overpaid amount to you. Any follow ups would need to be made with Social Security.

Just to clarify, though, Medicare premiums are withheld in the month of coverage, whereas Social Security benefits are paid a month behind. For example, the Medicare premium withheld from the Social Security benefit payment that you received in February covered your Medicare premium for February, even though the benefit payment itself was for the month of January.

Best, Jerry
