Ask Larry

When Will I Be Able To Receive Spousal Benefits?

I am 60 years of age and my husband is 78 and he has been receiving social security every since 1946 , I have never really worked, maybe except 2 or 3 jobs outside the home but I didn't work no more than about year .. I have been a home maker all my life.. I just wanted to know when will I be Abel to receive spousal benefit

Hi,

If your husband is receiving Social Security retirement benefits, you could be eligible for spousal benefits as early as age 62. However, if you start drawing anytime prior to full retirement age (likely around age 66 & 1/2 in your case) your benefit rate will be reduced for age (https://www.ssa.gov/OACT/quickcalc/earlyretire.html).

Best, Jerry
