Ask Larry

What Should I Do Next?

I got married so I don't qualify for my survivor benefits anymore I called the social security office and asked them to cancel my benefits and they said they did but I'm still receiving money. Do I just need to call them again or pay them back or what ?

Hi. Assuming that your benefits should be stopped, then yes you should follow up with Social Security. I wouldn't send any money back to them until they request it, though, because it may then not be properly credited to you.

You don't mention what type of survivor benefits you've bee receiving, but if you're a widow who's at least age 60 or a disabled widow who's at least age 50, then getting married wouldn't terminate your benefits (https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.04/handbook-0406.html).

Best, Jerry
