Spousal Benefits

When Should I File For Spousal Benefits, And Can I Continue Working?

My wife was recently approved for SS disability retroactive to September 1, 2016; she is 62 years old. I am 67 years old and am still working full time. I plan on retiring on June 30, 2017 and currently have a request (dated October 4, 2016) into SS for withdrawal of my suspended retirement application; I have received no SS payments as a result. I have planned to defer taking my SS retirement until age 70 to accrue deferred retirement credits.

Can I Receive Spousal Benefits At Age 62?

My wife is 66 collecting social security I'm 61. AT 62 can I collect on any of hers or do I need to file my own at 62.

Hi,

Whenever you filed for spousal benefits, you would be deemed to also be applying for benefits on your own record. So, the only way that you will receive any spousal benefits is if your wife's full retirement age benefit rate is more than twice as much as your own. And if you start benefits at age 62, your benefit rate will be reduced by more than 25% from your full retirement age rate.

Best, Jerry

Can I Receive Spousal Benefits Before Age 62 If I Have A Child In Care?

I am 60 years old and my husband is 81 and is receiving SS. 6 years ago we adopted our grandson whose mother passed away. His fathers parental rights were taken away by the courts. Our adopted son is receiving SS benefits from my husband. I have heard that I am also eligible for child - in - care benefits as our adopted son is 9 years old. When I called SS they said child in care is for a deceased parent. That is not my understanding. Please comment. I assume also that I would not be eligible if I was still working. Correct? Thanks much

If I Remarry, When Will I Become Eligible For Spousal Benefits?

I am currently receiving divorced spouse benefits on my ex husband's account. I do not qualify for benefits on my own SSA record. I am planning to remarry. When I do, is there a one year waiting period before I can receive benefits on my new husband's account? (He is FRA and receiving benefits) . For the one year period do I also have to pay my own Medicare premiums?

How Much Will My Wife Receive?

Hi Larry, my full retirement benefit age is 66, but I will wait till 68 to start taking Social Security, so that should be an increase of 16%. When I'm 68 my wife will be at full retirement age of 66. Will she get 1/2 of my SS that I collect at age 68 or that of my FRB age of 66?

My husband retired and took early social security at age 62 in Nov of 2006...He was a county prosecutor for Washington County, Utah from 1983-Nov 2006. I closed my small Ballet school business in Jan . 2007 and filled for disability that spring .. I had to hire a disability attorney to get my disability
( diagnosis( cyclothymia/mild bipolar ) ...I was 58 in Dec. of 2006.

When I finally got my disability approved .....I believe it was in the summer of 2007. The miniscule amount that I got (around $650 )I figured was due to the facts that:

Can My Husband Draw Spousal Benefits Instead Of His Own?

If my SS benefits are more than my husbands can he draw 1/2 of my amount in lieu of his ss.

Hi,

The answer depends on when your husband was born. If he was born after January 1 1954, he'll be deemed to have filed for both his own benefits and spousal benefits whenever he files for either, and he'll essentially receive only the higher of the 2 benefits.
