Spousal Benefits

How Are Spousal Benefits Calculated?

Category:

My wife is 65 and will be 66 on April 2017. She is collecting disability benefits. I turn 66 this November. I plan to file and suspend and apply for benefits when I turn 70. My wife at that time will file for spousal support. What are they going to base the spousal benefits on? The amount at FRA or the amount at 70? P.S I just bought your software and it appears as if the amount is based on the amount at age 66 instead of 70.

Hi,

Can My Wife Receive Spousal Benefits Before I Apply?

Category:

Dear sir. I have a question about spousal benefits. My wife and I are of the same age. Since I earned more than my wife, she will get more benefits if she claim spousal benefits. Can she claim spousal benefits say when she is 62 while I delay my filing till my FRA of 66-1/2, or do we have to file together if she wants to file for spousal benefits? (She actually can file for her own benefits, but is only somewhat less than spousal benefits). Thanks.

Hi,

What Percentage Of My Benefit Does My Wife Get?

Category:

I plan to continue practicing until I'm 70 and then begin taking SS. I have 2 questions- 1) assuming that I die before my wife, does she receive what i get from SS at age 70, or does this amount get reduced to what i should have received at age 66 and 2) when my wife, who is 6 years younger then me, reaches her full retirement age, does she receive 1/2 of what I get because I waited until age 70? Thank you for the assist!

Hi,

Can I File For Reduced Spousal Benefits And Still Let My Own Benefit Grow?

Category:

I am 64 years old and still working. I was married for 16 years and then divorced. I have been married to my current husband for 21 years. He is 56, disabled, and on SSDI. Your book states that older spouses can collect a spousal benefit at age 62 no matter the age of the disabled worker. Does this mean I could retire now with a spousal benefit and let my own retirement benefit grow until age 70? Would I collect a percentage of my husband's benefit?

Hi,

Can I File For Spousal Benefits On My Wife's Record?

Category:

My wife applied for benefits 3 months before 65 (this month) because she is fighting cancer. I am 66 and have not applied for benefits. Can I apply for spousal benefits? I originally was going to wait to apply for at least a couple more years.

Hi,

Yes, you can and almost certainly should do so ASAP. Since you are age 66, the amount payable to you on your wife's record is already as high as it will get, and the spousal benefits you receive will not reduce the amount payable on your own record in the future.
