Can I Draw Benefits For My Stepchild?

hi i will start receiving benefits in aug 2017. i have been married for 1 year in oct 2017.. i have one stepchild she is 9 can i draw benefits ..

Hi,

If you're asking whether or not your stepchild will be eligible to receive benefits on your record, the answer is maybe. Stepchildren must meet a dependency requirement in order to qualify for benefits on their stepparent's record. The basic requirement is that the stepchild must have been receiving at least 50% of their support from their stepparent over a 12-month period in order to qualify.

Can I Apply For And Suspend My Benefits In Order To Permit My Daughter To Receive Benefits?

Hello Larry, Thank you in advance for your advise. I just turned 62 and heard of SS payments for my 14 year old daughter. I do not plan to retire until I am 68 years old. Can I apply for my SS benefits and then suspend them to allow my daughter to qualify for benefits? Does this reduce my monthly benefit when I retire at age 68. Are there any additional concerns I should consider? Thank you , Guy

Was The Answer I Got From Social Security Correct?

My wife, who is younger than 62, gets child benefits for her daughter, my step-daughter (age 14). I am older than 62, of course. We are getting separated. Social Security said, in response to my phone inquiry, that so long as I am continuing to support my step-daughter the benefits can continue, even though we are separated. The first question is: was the answer I got from Social Security correct? The second question is: what does "continue to support" mean in this circumstance.

Hi,

If I understand your question correctly, you want to know if your grandchildren can get benefits on your Social Security record. I can't answer that with a yes or no without more information.
