Suspended Spousal Benefits - The Rest Of The Story

I would like to express my sincere thanks to you & Jerry for the excellent advice you provided to a question regarding my right to file for spousal benefits ("Was Social Security Correct To Suspend My Wife's Benefits? - February 18, 2017). My husband filed and suspended just prior to the April 2016 deadline; I filed for spousal benefits in August 2016. Social Security approved, then immediately suspended, my spousal benefits. No one at Social Security could tell me why. After numerous calls I met with a supervisor at my local Social Security office who told me I missed my deadline by filing 30 days too late. Jerry's advice was to contact my Congressman for assistance. I did and it worked! Now almost 1 year later I received the back benefits I am due and am scheduled to start receiving monthly benefits this month. Obviously there are a lot of people at Social Security who are misinformed and just plain wrong. I am so grateful for your website and sound advice. Imagine - a happy ending involving Social Security.

Hi,

You're welcome. I'm glad they finally got it right.

Best, Jerry
