Is My Stepfather Eligible For Some Of My Mother's Social Security Benefits?

My step dad collects his fers from usps, my mom died 3yrs ago (she was collecting social security) Is he eligible for some of her social security benefits

Hi,

I'm sorry for your loss.

FERS (Federal Employee Retirement System) pensions are based on earnings that WERE subject to Social Security taxes, so it sounds like your stepfather's pension wouldn't affect his potential eligibility for widower benefits. However, he would only be able to receive Social Security benefits on your mother's record if he isn't already drawing higher Social Security benefits on his own record.

Best, Jerry
