Ask Larry

Is My First Payment Being Held Up For Some Reason?

I enrolled for SS in October 2021, as I was retiring in January 2022. My 65th birthday was 01/272957
I did receive my paperwork back from SS saying it would come February, 2022. I have not received a check at all. My Birthday was almost as month ago. Is it being held for another month?
Linda

Hi Linda. There appears to be a typo on your birth date, but I assume you mean that you were born on 1/27/1957. In that case, if you claimed your Social Security retirement benefits effective with January 2022, then your first payment was likely due on the 4th Wednesday of February (i.e. 2/23/2022)(https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10031-2022.pdf). If your payment wasn't received timely and if you've already received an award letter, then you may want to call Social Security to check on the status of your benefit payment.

Best, Jerry
