Ask Larry

Is It Possible To Know Which Services Provided In A Hospital Are Covered By Part A Or Part B Of Medicare?

From the list of services provided by the hospital invoice during my surgery back in DEC 2020 is it possible to know which services are covered by Medicare PART-A and which are covered by Medicare PART-B. This was a in-patient Hospital surgery performed at Advent Health Dade city Hospital

Primary Services $7000
Medical/Surgical Supplies $54000
Laboratory Services $3000
Radiology Services $1000
Operating Room Services $60000
Anesthesia Services $17000
Cardiac Services $1000

Thanks & regards
Ganga

Hi Ganga. I'm sure that it's possible for someone with Medicare expertise and access to complete records to be able to tell which bills would be covered by Part A as opposed to Part B of Medicare. I'm not a Medicare expert, though, nor does the list of services included in your question provide enough details to be able to differentiate which part of Medicare would cover the service.

My understanding is that Part A of Medicare only covers services provided by the hospital itself, and only if the person is an inpatient (https://www.medicare.gov/coverage/inpatient-hospital-care). Doctor visits aren't considered as part of the hospital's bill, nor are services provided in the hospital by contractors. Therefore, those bills would be covered under Part B of Medicare. It appears as though many of the items on your list, such as radiology and anesthesia, would likely be provided by contractors as opposed to the hospital itself (https://www.medicare.gov/coverage/outpatient-hospital-services).

Best, Jerry
