How Do I Change My Bank Information?

I need to change my bank information. Routing and account number. I had to close my old account and transfer funds to a new account

Hi. You may be able to change the account where your Social Security benefits are directly deposited online (https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/direct-deposit.htmlinformation), but if not you'll need to call Social Security at 800-772-1213. In theory you could request a direct deposit change by mailing in a form (https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ssa-1199-op82.pdf), but I wouldn't recommend that because it would likely take much longer to process.

It's probably too late in your case, but for other readers I should advise you not to close the account where your benefits are currently being directly deposited until after you've confirmed that your benefits have been rerouted to your new account. If a bank returns your direct deposit because your account has been closed, Social Security will likely suspend your benefits until verifying that your new direct deposit information.

Best, Jerry
