Do I Need To File On My Account Before My Wife Can Get Spousal Benefits?

I am 62 Oct 5, 2016. Working full time. I don't plan on taking SS until I turn 66. My wife is 69 and collecting on her own SS work history. Do I have to file on my SS before she can file for half of mine.

Hi,

Yes, you must be entitled to your benefits in order for your wife to be eligible for spousal benefits on your account. And, if you're working full-time, the Social Security earnings test may prevent you and your wife from being able to draw benefits on your record until you reach full retirement age. For more information on the earnings test, see the following reference: https://www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/whileworking2.html.

Best, Jerry
