Can My Wife And I File At The Same Time?

I have been collecting spousal benefits under my restricted application since I turned age 66. I am turning 70 this coming November 4 and will be applying for my own benefit to start then. My wife will apply for a spousal benefit to begin then as well. My question is this: can we each apply at the same time for these changes to benefits or should I apply first and wait for for a confirmation of my application before she applies for hers? I intend to do this 4 months before my November 4 birthdate.

Hi. You and your wife can potentially file your applications on the same day, but according to Social Security's website at least your wife will be unable to apply online. I'm not positive that you could apply online either, but I don't see anything on their website that indicates that you couldn't.

So, either you and your wife can set up an appointment to apply together by phone, or you could try applying online and then your wife would need to apply by phone sometime after you apply.

Best, Jerry
