Can My Ex Cause My Social Security Benefits To Be Reduced?

My former spouse remarried and sent me a paper he created asking me to sign stating my social security benefits were considered half his as retirement. Like an idiot, I signed it and did not keep a copy. I did not know he had remarried and thought it was spouses benefits he wanted, now I know otherwise. He has not submitted anything to the court and it was about 6 years ago post qdro. Cane he access my social security reducing my benefit?

Hi,

You can't sign away your rights to Social Security benefits, so whatever you signed won't affect your Social Security eligibility nor your benefit rate in any way.

If you were married for at least 10 years and aren't remarried, you may be eligible for divorced spousal benefits even if your ex is remarried. You may want to consider using the maximization software available on this website to determine your best filing strategy.

Best, Jerry
