Can I Get Spousal Benefits?

My husband and I have been married for 44 yrs I remained at home as a housewife, except for very few years (4) that I did work outside.
I am 69 yrs. and I am considering to start collecting under my husband Social Security Retirement Spousal Benefits, my husband is still working full time and his plans for retirement are in about 4 more years .when he will be 75. I would like to know if I can go ahead without hurting his own SS plans and also where to start in order to apply to do so. I will appreciate any insight you could give about it.

Yes, as long as your husband has filed for his benefits, you can get spousal benefits on his record. If he hasn't filed, he should do so as soon as possible, since there would be no advantage for him to wait to apply.

Your receipt of spousal benefits will have no negative affect on your husband's benefits, so you should also file as soon as possible. Your benefit amount will not get any higher if you wait to apply.

You can apply online at ssa.gov, or by phone or in person at a Social Security office. You can make an appointment by calling them at 1-800-772-1213.
