Are There Any Restrictions In Switching To Spousal Benefits After Filing For Your Own Benefits?

If a spouse files for full SS Benefits at FRA, are there any restrictions in switching to higher spousal benefits two years later when her husband files for SS at age 70?

Hi,

Such a spouse could file for additional spousal benefits when her husband files for his benefits, but she wouldn't be allowed to 'switch' to just spousal benefits. What would happen instead is that she would continue receiving her own retirement benefits, plus any spousal benefits for which she subsequently qualifies. Her unreduced spousal rate in the scenario you present would be equal to 50% of her husband's full retirement age rate (PIA) minus her own PIA.

If you and your wife are nearing retirement age you should strongly consider using our maximization software to compare your various options and determine your best overall strategy.

Best, Jerry
