Ask Larry

Am I Eligible For Medicare Or Medicaid?

Sir,
I am 57 and got on disability , SSDI, the maximum in Feb 2017. I have terrible private insurance, pays NEVER. I desperately need MEDICAID or MEDICARE, you know the correct one. I would do or say anything to get it because I NEED it. I'm a disabled Pharmacist. I really need insurance help. Please advise.

Also.......Sir,
Is there a list of extra benefits I could apply for, I'm struggling financially. Thank you so much, Newton

Hi Newton,

You won't be eligible for Medicare until you've been receiving Social Security disability benefits (SSDI) for 2 years. If your month of SSDI entitlement was February 2017, you should qualify for Medicare starting February 2019.

Medicaid is a needs based benefit. You may want to check out the Medicaid.gov website to see if you might qualify: https://www.medicaid.gov/.

I'm sorry, but I don't know of any list of extra benefits. You may want to try contacting the Department of Social Services in your area to see if you qualify for any types of assistance.

Best, Jerry
