Ask Larry

Am I Eligible To File For The Stimulus Payment?

I myself are not able to work and haven't been elegible as of yet for social security but my 9 year old receives his own ssi and his father's ssd after his father passed. Since my child is on ss and I am his payee, am I eligible for the stimulus check or because he is a minor am I not eligible to file for the stimulus?

Hi,

I'm only able to answer questions about Social Security benefits, not stimulus payments. The IRS has set up the following website with information about stimulus payments: https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/economic-impact-payments-what-you-need-to-know.

If your son is receiving child's benefits from his deceased father's Social Security record and if you were married to his father, then it sounds like you may qualify for Social Security mother's or surviving divorced mother's benefits. In that event you should probably contact Social Security to see about applying for benefits if you haven't already done so.

Best, Jerry
