Can My Friend Sell Her Home If She's Receiving SSDI Benefits?

My friend is on S.S.D.I. and owns a large home she can't take care of. Can she sell and transfer the monies to a new home?

Hi. If your friend is only receiving Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits, selling her home wouldn't affect her benefits regardless of how much the home sells for or what she does with the proceeds. The only type of benefits that Social Security administers that could be affected by the sale of a home is Supplemental Security Income (SSI). SSI is a needs based benefit, so any change in a person's assets or income can potentially affect their SSI eligibility or payment amount.

Best, Jerry
