Will Marriage Increase Our Benefits?

Hi, I'm 40, my daughter's 6 and my boyfriend is 62. He collects retirement and SSI monthly. We have been together for over 3 yrs and are thinking about getting married. If so will his benefits increase or decrease? Thanks, Deeanna

Deeanna, it's not possible to say if his benefit would increase after marriage. Is he really receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or is he receiving a standard Social Security retirement benefit? You can enter your information into our software and first run a report with your marital status as partnered, which will treat you as two single individuals, and then run a report after changing your status to married to see the effects on what benefits would become available. Thanks, John
