How Can We Get Our QI Status Eliminated?

Hello.
Both my husband and I initially renounced Part B when we retired in 2020. We later realized it was a big mistake. In Nov. 2021we used a health insurance agent to help us reinstate Part B. We both had PartB retroactively reinstated , showing coverage from 07.01.2021. In the process of having Part B issued, we were assigned QI status, which we did not know what it was. We suspect the person helping us with the paperwork did not put in all our info. We recently moved from NY to West Virginia. As of now, we still have QI status and we are concerned , because we have combined savings at around $120,000. Please tell us how to have this QI status eliminated, so that we could pay ourselves for PartB. We do not want to do something unlawful. Thank you for your help.

Hi. The Qualifying Individual (QI) program is a needs based program that helps individuals pay for their Part B Medicare premiums. QI programs are administered by the individual states, not by Social Security. My expertise is limited to Social Security benefits, so I'm not able to give you much advice.

The following Medicare website has information about the QI program: https://www.medicare.gov/your-medicare-costs/get-help-paying-costs/medic.... It sounds like you'll need to contact the agency that administers the QI program in your state.

Best, Jerry
