Am I Eligible To Receive Benefits From My Ex-Husband's Social Security?

Hi Larry,
Am I eligible to receive benefits from my ex husband’s (married over ten years) benefits? I am not remarried and we have been divorced for 18 years. He is 65 (still working) and I am 57 (not working). If the answer is yes, when may I start receiving it?
Thanks in advance!

Hi. Maybe, but the earliest that you could qualify for divorced spousal benefits is at age 62, and if you start drawing benefits prior to your full retirement age (FRA) of 67 then your benefit rate will be reduced for age. And, as long as your ex-spouse is living the only way you could qualify for divorced spousal benefits is if your own primary insurance amount (PIA) is less than half as much as your ex-husband's PIA (https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.03/handbook-0311.html). A person's PIA is equal to their Social Security retirement benefit rate if they start drawing their benefits at full retirement age (FRA).

Best, Jerry
