When Will I Get My First Payment?

I just applied for SS Benefits. My Birthday is April 25. Will my first month of eligibility be April and I will get my first check in May, or is my first month of eligibility be May and I will get my first check in June?

Hi,

That depends on your age and month of entitlement, as well as the type of benefit for which you applied. If you turn 62 on April 25, your earliest possible month of entitlement to retirement or spousal benefits would be May, and you would get your first payment in June. You must be 62 for a full month in order to be eligible for retirement or spousal benefits.

If you are turning age 63 or older on April 25, or if you applied for a different type of benefit (e.g. widow(er)), you could choose April as your first month of entitlement, in which case your first payment would arrive in May.

Best, Jerry
