Widow(er) Benefits

How Much Would My Husband Or I Be Paid If One Of Us Dies?

Hi Larry,

I am 65, recently retired ss amount is 1224 a month
My husband is 73, his ss amount is 211.00. He receives spousal amt totalling 593.00 (the 211 is taken away). If either of us dies, how would survival or spousal benefit work for my husband? Would my husband be eligible and how much would he be eligible for? Would I lose any ss if he passes first? Thank you.

Do I Have To Wait Until I'm Age 60 To Collect Survivor Benefits?

Hello Larry,
My wife passed in April 2016 she was 53. I am 59 now. Do I have to wait until I am 60 to collect Survivor benefits ?
Thank you

Hi,

I'm sorry for your loss.

The only way that you could qualify for widower benefits prior to age 60 if a) you're disabled or b) you have a child in your care who is either under age 16 or disabled, and the child is eligible for benefits on your wife's record.

Can I File On My Wife's SS Without It Affecting My Benefits?

My wife died unexpectedly of pancreatic cancer... SS paid 275 (I think) for her burial.. 3 months later I was diagnosed with terminal esophageal cancer. I was 57 then... SS told me I could file on my wife's SS benefits when I was 60 and even gave me the paper work to fill out. But now I'm onSSi disability.. can I still file on her SS... Without it effecting my benefits? Thanks GF

Hi GF,

I'm sorry for your loss, and sorry to hear about your illness.

What Percentage Of My Current Benefits Will My Wife Receive If I Predecease Her?

My wife started receiving reduced SS benefits at age 62. I started receiving SS benefits at age 70. Both of our full retirement ages are 66. What percentage of my current benefits will she receive as survivor benefits if I predecease her?

Hi,

Since your wife has now reached full retirement age (FRA), she'd get at least 100% of your benefit rate as a widow. She wouldn't get that full amount plus her own benefit, though, just the higher of the 2 amounts.

How Much Am I Supposed To Receive?

My wife passed away in 2001 and just started collecting spouse benefits I am 62 and wondering how much am I supposed to receive

Hi,

I'm sorry for your loss.

If you were born in 1958 and you claimed widower benefits starting with the month you reached age 62, your benefit amount would be paid at a rate of 80.5% of your wife's primary insurance amount (PIA).

Is Social Security Correct In Saying That I Don't Qualify For Widower Benefits?

I'm confused.
Social security told me that I was not eligible to receive widower benefits because my spouse had a private pension plan. Also I had to be 60 or 50 and disabled. Well I had been disabled since since I was 52 and it was documented by the V.A that was the last time I had worked. Also yes my spouse did have a private pension plan, but she also worked a second job with social security taken out.

Hi,

I'm sorry for your loss.
