Ask Larry

Should I File An Appeal?

Just received Feb 2nd notification my February SS would be reduced by $99.90. Reason, deducting past due premiums. I've made no changes. Seems odd. Do I think they are wrong they ask. This is the 1st time in 5 years for this to happen. Should I appeal? What past due premium is it? Thank you for your help.
Bob

Hi Bob,

The only 'premium' that I can imagine this referring to is a Part B or D Medicare premium. Before filing an appeal, I'd suggest contacting Social Security to ask for an explanation. If they tell you that it involves your Part D premium, you may need to contact the insurance company that handles your prescription drug coverage for an explanation.

Best, Jerry
