Isn't The Decision On When To File For Benefits Simply A Math Problem Based On Life Expectancy?

Isn't the decision as to what date to claim social security (for me either 66 or 70) really just matter of expected lifespan? If one's family history strongly indicates a lifespan expectation in the early 80's, then when to start social security is just a math exercise, right?

Hi,

In our opinion, no. We believe that you should generally use a filing strategy that is most likely to assure you of having enough income to provide for your needs if you live to your maximum possible age. For Larry's thoughts on this subject, see the answers on the link titled 'Break Even Analysis' in the topics column on the left side of this page.

In order to determine your best filing strategy, you should strongly consider using the maximization software available on this website. The software allows you to run various what-if scenarios based on your input of factors such as life expectancy, so it should help you determine the best course of action in your particular case.

Best, Jerry
