How Will Having A Child Affect My Boyfriend's Benefits?

My boyfriend receives benefits as a disabled adult child under his fathers ssdi. He is 25 and can not work because of a heart and other conditions. He has never worked. Recently I found out I was pregnant. We were wondering how this would affect his ssdi and also if the child would receive it to.

Hi,

Fathering a child would have no effect on your boyfriend's disabled adult child's (DAC) benefits. Marriage does result in the termination of DAC benefits in most cases, though, so you should be aware of that provision (https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0410115050).

If your boyfriend was getting disability benefits based on his own work record then his child could potentially qualify for child's benefits on his record, but not if he's only getting DAC benefits.

Best, Jerry
