How Do I File For Spousal Benefits Online?

I will reach full retirement age shortly and intend to file a restricted application for
spousal benefits only. I wish to file my application on line but do not see where to
make this physical selection. Please direct me. Thank you very much.

Hi,

I can't give you much information about the online application process, because Social Security only allows people who are actually applying for benefits to see the online applications. Also, I have no information about your circumstances, so I have no way of knowing whether or not filing for spousal benefits is your best option. You may want to consider using the maximization software available on this website before you file.

Spousal benefits are a category of Social Security retirement benefits, so I believe that you would begin by choosing the link that says 'Apply For Retirement Benefits' (https://www.ssa.gov/retire/). I can't help you much beyond that, but be careful to clarify that you only wish to file for spousal benefits and not for retirement benefits on your own record, assuming that's what the maximization software says you should do. In order to restrict your own retirement benefits from the scope of your application, I would suggest adding a statement in the remarks section of your application saying: 'I wish to exclude retirement benefits on my own record from the scope of this application'. Also, there may be a question in your application path that asks 'If you are eligible for both retirement benefits and spouse's benefits, do you want to delay receipt of retirement benefits?'. In order to file just for spousal benefits, you would answer yes to that question.

If you encounter any problems or confusion using the online application process, you may want to consider filing by phone or in-person instead.

Best, Jerry
