Ask Larry

Can My Wife Get Benefits Based On My Record?

When my wife retired she receives an amount of roughly 10% of what I receive. Can she receive an amount somehow based upon my earnings?

Thank you

Hi,

I can't give you an absolute answer without additional information, but it sounds like your wife might qualify for spousal benefits (https://faq.ssa.gov/link/portal/34011/34019/Article/3754/What-is-the-eli...). Your wife should probably contact Social Security to see if she's eligible, or run the maximization software available on this website.

Best, Jerry
